Top magazine retailers recognised at MagSell Awards

The Professional Publishers Association (PPA) crowned the UK's leading multiple magazine retailers on March 14 at the MagSell Awards 2013.

The event, which was held at Kings Place, London, followed the 2013 PPA Retail Forum, and was attended by leading figures from publishing, retail and the magazine supply chain.

Morrisons (pictured) took two of the five awards categories on offer: it claimed Magazine Retailer of the Year (over 250 stores) for the second year running and employee Gemma Koo was given the Outstanding Contribution to Magazine Retailing award.

Andy Mills of Tesco was named Magazine Champion of the Year, with the judges praising his infectious "knowledge and enthusiasm for magazines" which has led to the company exploring new ways to drive sales.

Eurogarages won the Multiple Magazine Retailer of the Year (up to 250 stores) and Asda scooped the award for Best Sales or Marketing Initiative of the Year for its Gondola End Youth & Children's Promotion in August 2012.

The winner of the 2013 MagSell Award for Independent Magazine Retailer of the Year, Raj Patel of Wardour News, will receive his award at an in-store presentation at a later date.

The judges said Mr Patel, who has increased magazine space by 30%, was a "role model for other retailers who has generated a thriving business through "innovation and sheer determination".

The awards ceremony followed the PPA Retail Forum, which gave multiple retailers publishers and leading figures from the magazine supply chain a platform to discuss the magazine category at retail.

Following a welcome from PPA CEO Barry McIlheney, Phil Melling, Sales Director at Frontline, gave an overview of the PPA Retail Marketing Group's work for 2013.

There followed sessions from Ashley Anzie of Kantar Worldpanel and Tom Fender of HIM!, before a discussion on partworks involving Anne-Laure Vanneau of Eaglemoss and Amanda Honeybun of De Agostini.

The day concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Jim Bilton of Wessenden Marketing that featured Stephen Hirst of Marketforce, Richard Crampton of Sainsbury's, Richard Walker of Future, and Tom Fender of HIM!.
