Founded in 1983 as Republican China by Lloyd Eastman, one of the American pioneers of Republican Chinese history, the journal focused on the history of the 1911–1949 period. Since assuming its current title in 1997, the coverage has expanded to include topics concerning both the last decade of the Qing dynasty and the post-1949 period. Edited by Dr James H Carter (Saint Joseph’s University, USA), the journal considers manuscripts from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, particularly insightful, empirically oriented, Chinese document-based studies that have historical depth.
James Carter anticipates some “key developments for the journal, one of the most exciting of which sees around sixteen years of archived content made available online. This is in addition to the current content going online which will greatly improve the visibility of TCC around the world.”
Kimberly Martin, Executive Publisher at Maney, welcomes the journal: “We are very proud to publish Twentieth-Century China, which expands Maney’s list in Chinese studies and brings with it an unrivalled reputation for high-quality research in this period.”
TCC will increase from two to three issues per year from 2012, with current content available electronically via IngentaConnect. The archive from 1994 will also be available online. For more information visit www.maney.co.uk/journals/tcc
The journal complements Maney’s other titles in the field, Early Medieval China, Ming Studies and T’ang Studies, forming a strong collection in Chinese cultural studies. It will also join the MORE History Collection which provides instant online access to nearly thirty international peer-reviewed journals.
