APA Awards 2009

Last week saw the APA International Customer Publishing Awards, which celebrate outstanding editorialised branded content, take place at Old Bilingsgate.

A record 15 agencies took home awards and we had the largest number of guests ever, “testament to the amazing buoyancy and growth of the industry in these challenging times.”

For the first time the awards were opened to international and non APA member companies.

Amongst the most successful agencies on the night was Redwood which won four awards - Best Automotive Title (Mazda), Best Membership Consumer Publication (Boots), Best Use of Video (Land Rover/Born Free) and Best Use of Photography (Land Rover).

Another big winner was Haymarket Network for Best Non-Retail Consumer Publication (IAAF and UK Athletics), Best Brochure (Army Recruiting Group), Best Consumer Digital Solution of the Year (Manchester United) and Editor of the Year (IAAF and UK Athletics).

Another agency scoring highly was John Brown Media. Awarded in three categories, the customer publishing agency topped the entries for Best International Communication (Home Retail Group), Best Retail Consumer Publication (Waitrose) and Best Use of Typography (Waitrose).

African lifestyle title, Arise also picked up an award. The Nigerian based international publication won Launch of the Year. Judges commended the Velo published magazine as "a great example of a launch that everyone wished they had come up with".

Additionally, UK-based non-member Hemisphere was awarded on the night for Best Public Sector/Government Title. Tasked with altering the public's view of the Northwest, Prime magazine was "the best evidence of effectiveness by miles" according to judges.

Julia Hutchison, COO of the APA, said: “Last night proved that there is much to celebrate in CP on a global scale. The new format of the awards has pushed the industry to demonstrate higher levels of creativity and most importantly effectiveness and the winning entries reflect why editorialised branded content has remained buoyant.

Our industry needs little excuse for a party but the annual awards are the Oscars of the industry and judging by the dancing I imagine there are some sore heads this morning!"
