Candis celebrates charity milestone

One of the country’s top selling women’s monthly magazines is celebrating the success of its business model after reaching a significant milestone in its donations to charity.

Candis magazine sets aside ten percent of its income for health charities and community projects.

Since its launch in 1962, it has raised more than £52 million pounds.

This year it will pass the £5 million milestone in its support for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The marketing director of Newhall Publications, which publishes Candis, Bryan Douglas-Dala (pictured with Marie Curie's Meg Scoble) said: “We’ve been a corporate partner of Marie Curie since 1998. In those eleven years our donations have helped numerous terminally ill people with end of life care.”

“Home based Marie Curie nursing care costs £20 per hour so £5 million, representing 250,000 hours of nursing, is a fantastic contribution to their funding.”

“The donations from Candis, made through Candis Club, to Marie Curie and the four other charities we support, come directly from magazine subscription income.”

“It’s a unique business model for the magazine world and one which works very successfully.”

Bryan is the grandson of the founder of Candis, accountant Joseph Douglas.  He launched the magazine to raise money for cancer research, after he lost his son and friends to the disease.

Still a family-run business, the managing director is Bryan’s cousin, Andrew Douglas.

Bryan added: “The family ethos remains very important at the magazine. The strap line is health, happiness, family life. Our editorial team ensures the features reflect that ethos which creates an inspiring and uplifting publication; something which is very popular with our members especially in these more difficult economic times. Some of our customers have been buying Candis since its launch. From our market research, we know they are loyal, that they enjoy the features in the magazine, they feel good about the contribution they make to charity via their subscriptions and they benefit substantially from the offers and discounts available.”

Unique among women’s monthlies, Candis is a subscription-only publication.  It was originally sold door to door. In 2001 the company changed its business model to a subscription only service.
