Daily Mail gives with one hand but takes with the other - NFRN

News of a long awaited price increase on the Daily Mail has been soured, says the NFRN, after it learned that the margin that retailers earn from the newspaper is being cut from 23.3 per cent to 22.4 per cent.

From Monday February 1st Monday to Friday editions of the Daily Mail and Scottish Daily Mail will increase by 5p to 65p but instead of earning 15.1p per copy, retailers will now receive 14.5p per copy, says the NFRN.

National President Ralph Patel said: “After Richard Desmond’s price slashing antics on the Daily Star and Saturday Express, the NFRN was initially pleased to hear that the Daily Mail was to increase in price. Much to our dismay, however, it seems that they are giving on one hand and taking with another. Yes, retailers will receive more money for handling copies of the Mail but not the full payment expected. This is a blow, especially following the support that independent retailers had given to the Mail for its recent Weight Watchers promotion.

“We are calling for a meeting with the Mail so we can tell its executives face to face of our members’ concerns and how the NFRN should have been consulted before any decision affecting the retail margin was undertaken, rather than being faced with a fait accompli.”
