During a video speech transmitted to the ceremony at Grosvenor House hotel, di Montezemolo paid tribute to Haymarket’s Autosport magazine by recognising the historic parallels between Ferrari’s entry into Formula One and the arrival of Autosport in 1950.
The speech was made in acceptance of the special Gregor Grant Trophy in honour of Ferrari’s road car and racing achievements.
“I think we have to thank all the men and the women that [all] these years have done a lot to create, maintain and develop the Ferrari myth all over the world,“ said di Montezemolo.
“It is also an important evening for Autosport,” he added. “So congratulations, best wishes and Happy Birthday even to Autosport not only Ferrari.”
Button picked up awards for British Competition Driver of the Year and International Racing Driver of the Year after becoming Britain’s 10th Formula One world champion this year.
Although Button has won a string of Autosport Awards in past years, this year’s ceremony had particular significance for him. “It’s a very special feeling to be stood here as world champion,” he said.
