The new ‘Portfolio’ category invites photographers to submit a small body of their work (10 images) on any theme or subject matter, linked together with a coherent idea. Entrants will also prepare a 100 word statement to support their submission, for a £10 admission fee. Entries will be appraised by an expert panel, including RPS President, Rosemary Wilman. The winning photographer will scoop a CANON EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera with 18-135mm EF-S Lens and the chance to submit their work for one of the world’s greatest photographic accolades – the highly desirable RPS Licentiateship, or the more specialised Associate distinction.
The new RPS backed category is the 11th category to be announced in the Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2010. Having attracted more than 101,000 submissions from across the globe last year, the contest has cemented its reputation as a leading competition for anybody with a passion for digital photography. It’s open to both amateur and professional photographers of any nationality, with the aim of revealing images that are creative, inspirational and technically superb.
Stuart Blake, Director General of The Royal Photographic Society, said: "Once again the Society is proud to be supporting Future’s Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition and hopes that this year’s event surpasses those held in previous years. We are especially pleased with the new ‘Portfolio’ category as it mirrors the requirements for the first stage of the Society’s Distinction process. The Royal Photographic Society stands at the forefront of encouraging members and non-members alike to submit their images for assessment by their peers which in turn starts them on the road to the ultimate award of a Fellowship."
Matthew Pierce, Group Publisher of Future’s Digital Creative portfolio, added: “I’m delighted to welcome the Royal Photographic Society back for their fourth year of supporting Future’s Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition. Our event continues to grow in reach and influence every year, and their involvement has helped to boost the credibility of the competition and its reputation as one of the world’s greatest. By launching an RPS backed category, we are giving photographers an opportunity to showcase a body of work, with the added bonus of working towards a highly desirable professional distinction.”
The Digital Camera Photographer of the Year is organised by Future’s Digital Camera magazine and its sister-site – PhotoRadar (http://www.photoradar.com) – the company’s online photography destination. The competition is also supported by Telegraph.co.uk and Visit Britain, the global tourism body.
