Key digital appointments at Trinity Mirror

Trinity Mirror has announced the appointment of Malcolm Coles to the newly-created role of general manager of Mirror Online.

Malcolm will oversee the running of the brand’s online platforms and is tasked with significantly growing the Mirror’s digital audience this year.

The editor of the site, Ben Rankin, will report directly to Malcolm who himself will report to Lloyd Embley.

Malcolm, who launched the experimental sites UsVsTh3m and Ampp3d last year, will retain his current role of digital product director, and in that capacity will continue to report to Simon Fox.

In further key digital changes, Steve Anglesey will take on the newly-created role of head of digital business development and will report into publishing director Paula Scott.

Steve will work with the senior team to deliver the digital strategy for the Mirror’s digital business in the UK and Ireland.

Dan Silver becomes Mirror Online’s head of sport, with responsibility for increasing the volume and quality of sport content across all of the Mirror’s digital platforms. Dan will also help to bring the best of the group's football content to mirror.co.uk

Additionally, Trinity Mirror has also announced the recruitment of Martin Belam as editor, new formats, following his work on helping to launch UsVsTh3m and Ampp3d.

Martin joins after running his own media consultancy for two years, and has previously worked at the BBC and The Guardian.

As part of the digital growth strategy the Mirror will strengthen the online team further during the course of 2014.

Lloyd Embley, editor-in-chief of the Mirror, said: “Our digital audience has grown exceptionally well over the last year. We need to ensure that this growth accelerates even further during 2014. Malcolm has a rare skill set that combines a background in editorial and digital product development which makes him the ideal person for this task.
