SFX’s new spin on Captain America

SFX, Future’s sci-fi, fantasy and horror magazine, has a new spin on superhero fever this month – giving away Captain America’s iconic shield ahead of the release of Captain America: The First Avenger in July.

Cap’s star-spangled weapon of choice has been recreated by Marvel and Future as an eight-inch pop-up official frisbee, available only with the August issue of SFX, out on 29th June.

The publishers expect to see these expanding fabric shields flying across cinemas everywhere during screenings of Captain America: The First Avenger, released in the UK on 29th July.

Dave Bradley, Editor-in-Chief of SFX, says: "Captain America is famous for throwing his big red-white-and-blue shield, so we thought it would be incredibly cool to work with Marvel to give away something in that spirit. And with summer finally here, what better time to get hold of a superhero toy to throw on the beach?"

Inside SFX 211 there’s a complete guide to Captain America: The First Avenger, which stars American heartthrob Chris Evans, featuring exclusive interviews with the cast and crew plus stunning new pictures.

SFX’s top 20 heroes of science fiction literature are named, with Arthur Dent (The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy), Winston Smith (Nineteen Eighty-Four) and Rick Deckard (Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?) among them.

The issue also features a world exclusive on the return of fantasy programme Merlin plus a look at the arrival of Teen Wolf on TV and a celebration of James Cameron’s classic Aliens on its 25th anniversary.

Clair Porteous (pictured), Group Publisher of SFX, says: “This is the summer of the superhero and SFX is standing out from the crowd. Sci-fi and comic book heroes are making geekiness cool and SFX is playing a big role in that.”

SFX issue 211 hits newsstands on 29th June, with a free Captain America frisbee, and is priced at £4.50.
