games celebrates 3DS launch with augmented reality cover

Issue 107 of games has just gone on sale with a special celebration cover featuring the most important hardware launch in years, the Nintendo 3DS.

Imagine Publishing says, “In yet another burst of innovation and creativity, the award-winning magazine has partnered with Nintendo and Capcom to create a games industry first – an augmented reality cover.” When this special cover is viewed through any modern mobile phone camera, readers can see a 3D model of Capcom’s Street Fighter icon, Ryu, standing on the cover, posing and throwing kicks and punches.

To support this groundbreaking treatment, this landmark issue features a nine-page feature detailing the A-Z of everything you need to know about the new 3DS handheld and the titles we can expect to see in the future, in addition to launch game reviews.

“We’re delighted once again to work with the hugely talented team at Imagine on another hugely innovative cover treatment,” commented Rob Saunders, Head of Communications at Nintendo UK. “It was fantastic to deploy an idea and concept on the cover that is actually at the very heart of the product, not settling for a regular print-based solution.

Just like Nintendo 3DS, this treatment is disruptive, innovative and groundbreaking in equal measure.”

“Working with both Nintendo and Capcom on this special cover was a great experience. Challenging, of course, but definitely exciting,” said Rick Porter, Editor in Chief of games. “It’s always a buzz when attempting something of this scale – especially when we’re doing so to celebrate a major hardware launch in this fashion. The 3DS will be introducing many consumers to augmented reality, and this treatment seemed so apt that we just had to make it happen.

No other videogame magazine has done anything like this before, so we knew that it would be hard work, but now, having seen the finished product, it was certainly worth the effort. This easily ranks as one of the best covers we’ve ever done on games.”

games 107 also contains an in-depth breakdown of Sony’s Next Generation Portable, an exclusive interview with industry legend John Carmack, and a massive feature on the next ambitious title from Platinum Games, Anarchy Reigns.
