New ABC certificate for magazines

ABC has announced that it has agreed new Reporting Standards that will allow publishers to present both print and digital editions on one certificate and offers more flexibility to publishers in how they can put claim qualifying digital editions.

The new Cross Platform Certificate of Circulation enables publishers to provide a single view of their circulation figures. This includes the circulation of digital editions of magazines designed especially for mobile devices such as Apple’s iPad.

Jan Pitt (pictured), Director of Magazines, ABC said, “ABC is constantly looking to improve its reporting to make it easier for the industry and we are delighted to be announcing the new Cross Platform Certificate to report print and digital circulation figures in one place. As more and more publishers are launching digital editions of their publication, it is crucial that we support the industry in promoting the growth of their digital offering.”

The new certificate, which applies to both consumer and business magazines, was agreed by representatives from the industry at the latest meetings of the ABC Reporting Standards Group. The new Reporting Standards will come into effect from January 2011. The Newspaper Reporting Standards Groups will be meeting in December to discuss similar changes to their Reporting Standards.

Nicola Rowe, Director of Circulation and Member Services at the PPA, said: “The launch of the Cross Platform Certificate of Circulation by ABC is a step forward for PPA members and the wider industry, who now have a means of recognising the growing circulation of their digital editions.”
