New Editor-in-Chief for BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine

BMJ, a leading healthcare knowledge provider, has announced Carl Heneghan as the new Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.

Carl Heneghan is Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) and Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) at Oxford University’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. CEBM is dedicated to the practice, teaching and dissemination of high quality EBM and making EBM accessible to a wide range of healthcare professionals.

Carl is a clinical epidemiologist and a world-leading expert in EBM and research methods. He has extensive experience in systematic reviews and quantitative methodologies on both communicable and non-communicable diseases. He has also led ground-breaking work, which notably includes the Tamiflu systematic reviews, as well as investigations into the evidence base for drug and device regulation, advising governments and influencing policy. An accomplished academic, investigator, teacher, and author, all his work focuses on changing healthcare for the better, says BMJ.

Carl Heneghan will take over as Editor-in-Chief from Richard Saitz from 21 June 2017.

Carl Heneghan says: “I am delighted to be the new Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, and I want the journal to be a flag bearer for the voice of the EBM community. BMJ EBM will publish original evidence-based research, insights and opinions on what matters for healthcare, focussing on the tools, methods, and concepts that are basic and central to practising evidence-based medicine.

“We are planning some exciting changes to the journal content, and will deliver relevant, trustworthy and impactful evidence. We invite those amongst the EBM community interested in being part of the mission of creating better quality evidence to join our new Editorial Board.”

Allison Lang, Publishing Director at BMJ, says: "We are delighted to appoint Carl Heneghan as the Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine. He is an internationally respected expert and champion for EBM, who shares our vision for advancing the academic and international reputation of the journal, and increasing its relevance to healthcare professionals. Carl also brings a wealth of media experience and we look forward to working with him to bring rich and stimulating content to the journal.”
