Newsstand Launch: Playgirl

Playgirl, a new monthly title, goes on sale on 7th April, priced £2.99.

According to distributors COMAG: “The latest incarnation of Playgirl aims to be more of a Women’s Lifestyle/Fashion title, but “sprinkled with hunks written by three playgirls”!

Describing itself as a unique proposition, appealing to both a male and female audience, Playgirl will feature general interest articles, lifestyle features and the very best male models. Having conducted a survey amongst its target audience, women aged 18-40, Playgirl has decided that women are not interested in looking at “men’s bits”, so the UK version of the title will be risqué rather than rude.

Every issue of Playgirl will have celebrity content and covers will pick up on the man of the moment. The launch issue has Johnny Depp on the cover and inside talking about being a ‘Pirate, Tourist & Thief of Hearts’.

Describing him as ‘Hollywood’s Hardest Worker’, the May-11 issue also features an interview with another American actor, James Franco, the star of hit film 127 Hours and co-host of this year’s Oscar ceremony, about his life since he found fame.

Regular features will include ‘Home-grown Hunk’ (which for the May issue will be England rugby player James Haskell not wearing many clothes) as well as tips on travel, fashion, healthy living and recipe ideas.

Not pretending to be high-brow, Playgirl does not want to sell pipe dreams or feature haute couture or even to be an expert, instead happy to be read by likeminded women with similar interests who want something to read on the bus, the train or the office as easily as they can on the sofa at home.”
