Shine 2011: Winners Announced

St Paul’s Girls’ School, London takes the Gold Award for Best Overall entry in the Shine 2011: School Media Awards.

The team from St Paul’s Girls’ School was presented with the most prestigious of the prizes on offer at the Shine 2011: School Media Awards held on 27th June at Stationers’ Hall in the City of London. Their magazine “The Marble” took the Gold Award.

The Silver Award went to SFM produced by Langley Park School for Boys and Blackpool Sixth Form College collected the Bronze Award for Sixth Sense.

Sir Christopher Meyer, our former Ambassador to Washington and previously Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission presented the awards ceremony and Kevin Fitzgerald CEO of the Copyright Licensing Agency spoke on the importance of copyright.

Clifford Jakes, Chairman of the Shine School Media Awards 2011, comments: “The Stationers' Foundation, the charity arm of the Stationers' Company, is proud to have launched the inaugural Shine Media Awards. The 2011 competition has been strongly welcomed by schools across the country with support from both state and independent secondary schools. We have been delighted with the calibre of entries and we congratulate the winners, but also all the schools that participated. The competition proves that there is a generation of new talent that has the ability to make its mark on the future of the publishing industry.”

As well as the teams from the finalist schools the audience included many of those from the media industry who had judged all the entries. They were extremely complimentary about the standard of publications, both in print and online, and about the dedication and effort that the students had shown in their work.

This is the first year of this competition in England and Wales. It recognises young creative talent, helps develop literacy, business skills and teamwork and encourages the students to consider the publishing industry as a career choice. Prior to the ceremony the students were able to visit an exhibition provided by many of the sponsors at which they could ask questions about the products on show and the career options open to them.

The Shine School Media Awards competition is open to every secondary school in England and Wales and is managed and promoted by the Stationers’ Foundation.
