What on Earth Magazines, a UK-based children’s magazines publisher, has announced a strategic investment by DMGT, the media group that owns the Mail newspapers and website, the i newspaper and New Scientist magazine.

What on Earth Magazines publishes and owns Britannica’s What on Earth! Magazine, which launched in partnership with Encyclopaedia Britannica in April 2022 and is now one of the fastest-growing children’s magazines, says the publisher.

What on Earth! Magazine is a visual non-fiction monthly magazine designed for ages 6 – 14. Each issue covers a wide range of topics from science to sport and music to history, so readers are guaranteed to find something they are interested in, and every fact is checked by Britannica experts, the publisher continued.

In little over a year, the publisher says the magazine has secured thousands of subscribers across more than 35 different countries and been nominated as 2023’s Children’s Brand of the Year by the Professional Publishers Association (PPA).

What on Earth Magazines Ltd was founded in late 2021 by children’s book author and publisher Christopher Lloyd, along with the magazine’s editor, Andrew Pettie, and art director, Mark Hickling.

“Giving children a beautiful, printed monthly magazine is the perfect way to engage all curious minds,” said Lloyd. “This partnership gives us the investment and reach to make Britannica’s What on Earth! Magazine a key part of any family’s desire to instil a love of learning through reading.”

“We think the product that Christopher and his team has created is truly inspirational. We look forward to making Britannica’s What on Earth! Magazine a central part of DMGT’s family offering for generations to come,” said Christopher Fordham, DMGT’s chief investment officer, originations.

Britannica’s What on Earth! Magazine is published 10 times a year. Subscriptions start from as little as £29.99 and special offers include a free Britannica children’s encyclopaedia as a sign-up gift.
