The Independent celebrates audience growth

The Independent has broken records in the year it moved to a digital-only newsbrand, seeing its audience grow by 46% (year-on-year).

The latest NRS PADD figures show that in the year it became the first major newspaper to close its print edition, The Independent has added 6,646,000 readers to its total audience, say the publishers.

This follows the digital newsbrand’s successful coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics, with Newswhip naming The Independent’s story about a Syrian refugee competing as an athlete as the most shared Olympics story on Facebook (from English-language publishers).

Earlier this summer, Newswhip also crowned The Independent as the biggest publisher globally on Facebook on the EU Referendum.

Christian Broughton, Editor of The Independent, said: "Month after month, the figures have demonstrated how the singular focus on digital is working for us. We have more readers now than we had before we went digital-only, and more paying subscribers too, via our Daily Edition app. It's been an amazing summer for news and the team have risen to every challenge, showing that the core values of The Independent are thriving in a new era."

These figures are inclusive of The Independent Daily Edition subscription app, which launched in March.

The Independent says it now has an editorial team of more than 100, as a result of continued investment both in the UK and globally. Global bureaux are due to open in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe, with expansion in the US continuing.
